Development of a compact quantum cascade laser spectrometer for field measurements of CO2 isotopes
نویسنده
چکیده
We report the development of a field-deployable, pulsed quantum cascade laser spectrometer. The instrument is designed to measure the 13C/12C isotopic ratio in the CO2 released from volcanic vents. Specific CO2 and CO2 absorption lines were selected around 4.3 μm, where the P-branch of CO2 overlaps the R-branch of CO2 of the 0001–0000 vibrational transition. This particular selection makes the instrument insensitive to temperature variations. A dual-channel cell balances the two absorption signals. We provide details of the instrument design and a preliminary demonstration of its performance based on laboratory measurements of 16O12C16O and 16O12C18O. PACS 42.55.Px; 42.62.Fi; 07.88.+y

A high precision pulsed QCL spectrometer for measurements of stable isotopes of carbon dioxide
We describe a prototype instrument using a Peltier cooled quantum cascade laser for precise measurement of stable carbon (C/C) isotopologue ratios in atmospheric CO2. Using novel optics and signal processing techniques in a compact instrument, we are able to detect the difference between sample and reference with a precision of 0.1‰ (2σ std error of mean of 11 samples) in 10 minutes of analysis...

In order to harness the power of UASs for in situ atmospheric monitoring of tracers such as CO2, N2O, and CH4 and as a precursor for extending detection limits to encompass sub-ppb level species, we have developed small, lightweight, single mode laser systems with co-developed integrated electronics. The laser sources are of various types including newly developed pump-enhanced difference frequ...

Real-time methods to monitor stable isotope ratios of CO2 are needed to identify biogeochemical origins of CO2 emissions from the soil-air interface. An isotope ratio infra-red spectrometer (IRIS) has been developed to measure CO2 mixing ratio with δ(13)C isotopic signature, in addition to mixing ratios of other greenhouse gases (CH4, N2O). The original aspects of the instrument as well as its ...

A compact absorption spectrometer with a midinfrared tunable quantum cascade laser operating at 4.86 microm (2054 cm(-1)) is used to measure lower concentrations of carbonyl sulfide (COS) in air. A detection sensitivity of approximately 30 parts in 10(9) of COS and the selectivity of two stable isotopes, 12C(16)O32S and 12C(16)O34S, are demonstrated. Specifically, the feasibility of detecting C...

Better quantification of atmosphere-ecosystem exchange of the isotopologues of CO2 could substantially improve our ability to probe underlying physiological and ecological mechanisms controlling ecosystem carbon exchange, but the ability to make long-term continuous measurements of the isotopic composition of exchange fluxes has been limited by measurement difficulties. Quantum cascade (QC) las...
